Abstract
This study presents a comprehensive etymological account of the scientific names of Odonata species recorded in Türkiye. A total of 122 confirmed species and subspecies, and 14 potentially occurring taxa are included. For each taxon, the derivation of the generic and specific epithets is traced, with detailed explanations of Greek and Latin roots, geographical toponyms, personal commemorations, mythological references, and other linguistic sources, such as Arabic when applicable. The study emphasizes the cultural, historical, and linguistic diversity embedded in the taxonomy of dragonflies and damselflies. It also highlights the importance of understanding species names for educational purposes and for facilitating communication among taxonomists, ecologists, and nature enthusiasts.
